Meet Dynamic Solar Tech (DST), a leading solar solutions provider that has been installing architecturally beautiful solar installations in the GTA since 2008. The firm installs residential, commercial and governmental solar systems – and everything else in-between. They have been building a name for themselves in special solar installations and applications sometimes referred to as building-integrated and building-applied photovoltaic solutions (BIPV and BAPV).
With their creative design team and today’s technologies, choices for customers surpass standard solar panel installation. Some possibilities and options DST offers include:
- Solar cladding/curtain walls
- Solar windows/skylights
- Solar shingles
- Solar awnings/gazebos
- Solar carports
- Thin filmsolar laminates
- Custom coloured cells and glass
One of DST’s recent installations is a rooftop awning over the patio of Planet Traveler Youth Hostel on College west of Spadina. It is a fantastic example of the creative and outside the box thinking of the DST team.
Planet Traveler approached the DST team about installing solar panels on an as-yet constructed awning over the patio outside the fifth floor bar in participation with the MicroFIT program. The DST team suggested building the awning out of photovoltaic panels using custom-made racking. The seams between the panels are sealed providing a continuous surface for water runoff and protection for users below. DST designed and installed a custom eavestrough to direct the flow away from the patio into a rain barrel for watering rooftop plants.
BIPV solutions such as the solar awning use photovoltaic products in place of construction material. While costs can be similar to many building cladding options, BIPV solutions will generate power for a building providing all the benefits of standard cladding, have a return on investment and can be made into a real showpiece. Some of these solutions can even contribute to LEED certification.
DST approaches every project with a custom perspective working diligently to find the most aesthetic solution for solar adoption.
